Prepare before buying
Define your goal
- Companion: prioritize a steady temperament, regular handling and a life with other equines.
- Breeding: review origins, papers, conformation, health and fit with your program.
- Show or leisure: check type, movement, training and ease of handling or transport.
Questions to ask
- Papers: ask about AMHA/AMHR status, origins and available documents.
- Health: ask about veterinary follow-up, hoof care, feeding and regular care.
- Temperament: observe handling, sociability and behavior with people and other horses.
Prepare the arrival
Before buying, make sure you have shelter, suitable fencing, a feeding plan, a hoof care professional, an equine veterinarian and another equine companion. A miniature horse should not live alone and requires the same seriousness as a full-size horse. You can also read our miniature horse care FAQ to prepare for the arrival.
A farm visit also helps you see living conditions, meet the horses and discuss the choice that best fits your situation.
